Minami-ke - You’re Doing It Wrong
Sorry, I am not liking this one bit. Well, it’s not that bad, but it really shouldn’t be getting the amount of hype it seems to be getting. Okay, let’s try take in small bites. I’m a big fan of Sakuraba Koharu’s work Minami-ke and Kyou no Go no Ni since before both of them were animated so this was supposed to the eries I was looking the most forward to. After two months of dorm arrest, Thanksgiving break hits. I rush back home, and eagerly play episode one of Minami-ke first while thinking, “All the entries I’ve been reading back at dorm gave positive reviews this should turn out really well then. No worries of it going bad.” Yeah sure, wishful thinking there. Exactly three minutes and seventeen seconds into the show, I drop my headphones.
Now, there’s plenty I can attempt to be critical about, but what really pained me the most and started all these disappointment chain reaction was Kana’s voice. I’m pretty sure everyone watches it perfectly fine while oblivious to all this. Yes, there is nothing wrong. They made a good choice on a voice that sounds like Kana’s age. That’s where it went wrong for me though. I’ve occasionally reread Minami-ke to relief boredom so I always had a voice set for Kana in my mind. I’m not sure if a lot of others do this, but I actually create image and watch it when I read a book. Well, same for manga, except I only need to imagine the voice. Anyway, that was slap in the face just like the ones people who listen to drama CD’s receive when they watch the anime version of whichever with a completely different sounding cast. Can I get used to it? I most likely can, yes. However, that doesn’t change how I might have had a better initiate opinion with a different voice casting.
It just feels awkward hearing a voice like that deliver Kana’s bratty lines. I was expecting to hear a more childish tone to fit along with the way she acts. No, I don’t agree Kana had to naturally sound older than Chiaki because she’s older. The whole part that made Minami-ke funny for me was the fact that Kana and Chiaki had reverse roles. Kana’s the older one who’s somehow the bratty troublemaker type while Chiaki’s the disciplined introvert-like type. (Think Miu and Chika if else, I’m having trouble writing all of a sudden again.) It should have been at a point where you wonder which one is the real older sister. Anyway, everything just seemed lacking because the voices don’t reflect that as well. Not going to put this one active blogging, but I’ll endure and see how it develops. Hopefully the anime’s original contents keep me entertained in the future. I don’t exactly find any of these amusing at the moment since well… I have that entire volume of Minami-ke burned right into my brain. No, Sensei and Ninomiya-kun doesn’t cut it either. Just enough to force myself to chuckle, but no more beyond that. If am to rate it now, I would put it on the same level as the last few episodes of Lucky Star.
P.S. totali help me! I want to love this show, but so many things about the adaptation bothers me. Maa ii wa, on to the next show to catch up with before riding back to that ghetto dorm.
It is perfectly alright to like the original and not watch the adaptation. Just like how I read One Piece and don’t watch the anime.
Wait - did I get this right? So (other than voices you hear in your head while reading) you don’t like Kana’s voice (which, as you say, may sound about right for her age), cause she doesn’t sound older than Chiaki? Why not hate on Chiaki’s voice for sounding older than Kana?
lol i agree i had a hard time adapting to kana’s voice
but i live wit it i guess
tj han: Yeah, this is just another “it sucks compared to the manga” post. Typical, but I just wrote it anyway. Hmmm, isn’t One Piece of kind of different though? Prime time shows like Naruto, One Piece, and etc. never really turn out good especially with all those fillers. Minami-ke’s is only like twelve episodes from I know so this one had a chance of having more quality.
kacpy: I meant I don’t like the voice because she DOES sound older than Chiaki. It just doesn’t match up with her personality.
Hei: Yeah, that’s what I plan to do. Live with it. Oh well… if people still appreciate Minami-ke despite the screw ups, I don’t mind too much.
I’m definitely a anime over manga person, but I usually don’t have any problems with voices. If anything, Kana’s voice makes me laugh because that chick from Zegapain keeps poping back into my head (same seiyu). Eh, if this one doesn’t satisfy you, maybe next season’s alternate retelling will prove to be different?
That one has funny art though. :P
I have the blessing (?) of not having heard of the Drama CD yet, so I had a clean slate for the voice choices. The voices can be unfitting at times, I admit.
They probably casted the voices by how well they can sing.
[...] In fact, the only reason I picked it up was because Aurabolt recommended for me to (ironically, he wasn’t satisfied with the anime adaption afterwards). The show soon proved to be one of the funniest, if not THE [...]
