Clannad (Visual Novel) - Hiiragi Kappei

This one is tough to interpret. Were the makers serious when they made this route, or was this just a joke?

First, the attempt at dramatizing Kappei’s story was rather weak. If was as if they forgot the main dish, and stuck in the information about Kappei’s illness way towards the end. To compare, it was like a typical Korean drama. When they suddenly run out of ideas, they decide to make the main character have cancer.

What I am saying is that the story can’t make a choice. Is this a humor route for us to laugh about Sunohara having wet dreams about a trap, or is this supposed to be serious? If they wanted the latter, they might as well have put much more emphasis on Kappei’s illness. Sure, we do suspect it when Tomoya finds a weird pill bottle in Kappei bag, but that was the only clue. You can’t expect people to feel under the tension when all the information is a mystery. Then again, I do have this dislike for stories that take a sharp turn.

Weak story aside, Kappei’s route was the most amusing and unexpected one of the bunch so far. I have one piece of advice for comrades tackling Clannad. That is to say, “Clannad has a trap!” Be prepared, as I sure wasn’t. Although Clannad looks like the last game to actually have a trap character, it does. Actually, you can obviously tell he’s a guy (who lost his marbles) at first sight so he’s not a trap. Sunohara obviously needs training if he thinks Kappei passes off as a trap. We’ve all seen better hidden traps right?

Oh, we’re not done yet though. This is another reason why I cannot take this route seriously. (Spoiler ahead.) To be honest, it forms a rather disturbing mental image for the weak as well. Ryou, why? You did not have to do that. Sure, rules say quiet girls are actually bold deep down, but that was not necessary.

Right during the (serious) climax of the story, she slips in a line about her intention to secretly have Kappei’s ba… or the scene where I swear Tomoya and Sunohara knocked on their door right when Kappei and Ryou were about to… No, I can’t say it. Give me a bucket.

Yeah Clannad, as if the presence of a trap wasn’t enough. Thank you, you have ruined my impression of Ryou in exchange for my laughter. It’s disturbing, yet somewhat equally amusing as well.

Well, at least you got the problem with the laser tag game and all worked out. I worked through and hit the same problem you did earlier too, just to test if it was a glitch or not. But either way, that seems to be an interesting story path.

What the heck is this trackback? It’s pissing me off.

Oh well, yeah. Slowing progressing with Tomoyo’s route at the moment. Better get back to the anime’s that are sitting and crying on my harddrive.
